Symposium “New Political Challenges for Germany, Turkey and the EU – 2022”

Turkish-German University Political Science and International Relations Department and the Center for Turkey and EU Studies (CETEUS) realized, in cooperation with German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, an international symposium titled “New political challenges for Germany, Turkey and the EU – 2022” with the participation of around 100 international guests including academicians, representatives of non-governmental organizations and the media and students from different universities on 27 May 2022 at the Beykoz campus of the Turkish-German University.
The opening speeches of the symposium were given by the Coordinator of the German Consortium of the Turkish-German University, Prof. Dr. Ferit KÜÇÜKAY, and faculty member of the University of Cologne and Vice-President of the German Consortium responsible for the foundation of the Turkish-German University, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang WESSELS.
The symposium continued with the opening panel titled “New Institutional Dynamics in EU-Turkey Relations.” At the panel chaired by Dr. Wulf REINERS (German Development Institute), the institutional dynamics of EU-Turkey relations were discussed by Prof. Dr. Bahar RUMELILI (Koç University), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru TURHAN (Turkish-German University), Dr. Funda TEKIN (IEP - Institut für Europäische Politik), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Basak Zeynep ALPAN (Middle East Technical University) based on the findings of the volume “EU-Turkey Relations: Theories, Institutions, and Policies” (Palgrave, 2021) edited by Dr. Wulf REINERS and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru TURHAN.
After the opening panel, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director for EU Affairs Ambassador Faruk KAYMAKCI gave a keynote speech. Following the keynote speech, the second session started with the moderation of Prof. Dr. Atila ERALP (Istanbul Policy Center). In this session titled “The West and Turkey after the war in Ukraine – A game changer? – Turkish, European, and global perspectives”, Prof. Dr. Fuat KEYMAN (Sabancı University), Prof. Dr. Julie SMITH (Cambridge University), Prof. Dr. Birgül DEMİRTAŞ (Turkish-German University), Dr. Günter SEUFERT (SWP), and Prof. Dr. Thomas CHRISTIANSEN (Luiss Università Guido Carli) made their presentations.
The symposium was finalized by the closing remarks.
