At the 36th annual conference of the Working Group on Objective Hermeneutics at Goethe University Frankfurt, on 5 September 2026 Assoc. Prof. Dr Thomas Krumm gave a lecture on the French Romantic painter, Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863). The lecture focused on a new interpretation of the fresco ‘Jacob’s wrestling with the Angel’ in the Chapel of the Holy Angels at Saint-Sulpice, Paris, which depicts the motif of the patriarch Jacob wrestling all night with a mysterious being by the River Jabbok, as described in Genesis 32:24–32. Delacroix came from a family of high political standing and was himself a political painter.
